Mulch is a Very Good Thing for your Roses

The dictionary defines a mulch as “a protective covering (as of sawdust, compost, or paper) spread or left on the ground to reduce evaporation, maintain even soil temperature, prevent erosion, control weeds, enrich the soil, or keep fruit (such as strawberries) clean” which it does, and also enhances the area’s overall appearance. Mulching mimics the natural environment found in forests where leaves and branches blanket the soil surface, replenishing nutrients as they decompose and creating an ideal environment for root growth.

A layer of mulch around your roses or other areas of your garden can give you a HUGE return on your investment of time and materials as the mulch:

  • Conserves moisture by slowing evaporation
  • Reduces growth of weeds
  • Helps reduce erosion
  • Adds organic matter as it breaks down
  • Increases water absorption and retention
  • Makes surface areas more attractive

Not sure what to use? If possible, choose an organic material that adds nutrients to the soil as it breaks down.  Check out this information on a wide variety of mulch materials to find one that will work for you.
