ROSE CARE FOR JULY
by Lenore Ruckman, Consulting Rosarian

I had hoped for the end of our rain in June and look what we got - more rain and strong wind. This set back the second bloom on many of my roses so I had a sparse bloom to enter in the Marin County Fair for the 4th of July weekend. Also some more weeds came back which was a real chore to get the garden cleaned up again. Diseases set in also: rust, blackspot and mildew too. Evaluate those bushes to spray organic or chemical. Remember to water well before spraying or fertilizing any liquid to prevent burn on leaves.

What a year for the rose; heavy rain and a lot of wind damaging new canes and big blooms blown over or broken off. And then the weather remained very cool for June. July should be the real beginning of our typically warm summer with cooling fog in the evening and in early am, and hopefully warmer days. When we will get our first real hot spell of 3 or 4 days is anybody's guess.

Remember to check mulch and fertilize again and keep up the watering deeply to get good blooms whenever they will occur.

Take time to enjoy the summer color of roses and other flowers in your garden and share roses with friends.
