SUMMARY:Rethinking Late Summer & Fall Rose Health Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Mark Windham\, Professor Emeritus of Plant Pathology\, The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture\n\nJoin us as Dr. Mark Windham shows us the way to encourage a healthy spring garden starts with actions in late summer and fall.  As the days get shorter\, rose foliage becomes less effective in converting energy to sugars. Leaves become nutrient sinks (use more nutrients than they produce via photosynthesis). Rose roots have become saturated with starch leading to a change in the rose’s physiology which triggers the slow transition toward dormancy. At this time\, plants become more susceptible to many diseases that can overwinter on canes or in debris on the soil surface.\nIn this seminar\, we will look at ways to maintain healthy roses as they begin the dormancy transition. Proper planning and direct actions in the fall will pay dividends for healthy roses the following spring. The seminar will look at cultural ways to successfully maintain rose health in both spray and no-spray gardens.\n\nCR CREDIT APPROVED\nhttps://register.gotowebinar.com/#register/7493080932168446812

SUMMARY:Designing a Garden for Rose Collectors. The Normal Rules Don’t Apply!
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Paul Zimmerman\, Owner\, Paul Zimmerman Roses Consulting and Design\nJoin us for an engaging webinar as Paul Zimmerman presents the following about his program. “As passionate rose growers we are always adding new roses to our gardens. This makes it hard to be able to design a garden using traditional means like color grouping\, growth habit etc. This webinar gives you some tips from my own gardens on how to create a good looking garden while still allowing roses to come and go”\nAbout Paul: “I started Paul Zimmerman Roses Consulting and Design around one simple message. Roses are nothing more than flowering shrubs and that’s how you should use\, and treat them. Through consulting\, design\, writing\, lectures and workshops my goal is to make roses less intimidating.”\nCR CREDIT APPROVED\nRegister Here: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/4975009088334771544

SUMMARY:Great Big Roses
DESCRIPTION:Are your roses growing but not “thriving?” You will find this talk by Spenser Thomas very helpful! Spenser will talk about the soil biology that helps your rose fertilizer to work more effectively.  He will explain why GREAT BIG ROSES\, a proprietary blend of beneficial microbes\, will support root health and convert locked up nutrients into forms your roses can actually use. \nIn addition to living microbial support\, Great Big Roses supplies trace minerals and micronutrients often missing from standard fertilizers. By addressing these nutritional gaps\, it helps prevent limiting deficiencies and supports fuller\, more vibrant flowering. \nSpenser will be bringing supplies of GREAT BIG ROSES with a special offer for Marin Rose Society members.  Great Big Roses is an eco-friendly\, family owned business. \nA RAFFLE of roses and other items and the MONTHLY ROSE SHOW will be held after the presentation! \n

SUMMARY:A Life With Roses
DESCRIPTION:Tom Carruth has created more than 150 rose varieties\, including 11 All-America Rose Selections – many of which you probably have in your garden!  He has worked in the Rose Industry in California for fifty years\, including at Jackson Perkins and Weeks Roses.  In 2012\, he retired from Weeks to become Curator of the Huntington Garden Rose Collection in San Marino\, CA. \nThe broad goal of Tom’s rose breeding was to make the rose a contender with all plants\, rather than a fussy queen of the garden. His hybrid introductions stress disease resistance\, fragrance\, floriferousness\, novelty\, and attractive habit. ‘Julia Child’ serves as a prime example\, achieving a worldwide introduction. The velvety purple ‘Ebb Tide’ was the first of a big color breakthrough. \nTom will share with us his inspiring “Life with Roses” – an experience not to be missed! \nA RAFFLE of roses and other items and the MONTHLY ROSE SHOW will be held after the presentation!

SUMMARY:E.B. Stone Soil Health & Fertilization; Gardening Relieves Stress
DESCRIPTION:Located in Solano County\, E.B. Stone is one of the nation’s oldest organic fertilizer producers. Founded in 1916 in San Jose\, E.B. Stone the company was named for a local farmer\, E.B. Stone. He created a fertilizer for his fruit trees that produced bigger and better crops. His fertilizers and amendments became so popular\, he turned his attention to his self-named company full time\, eventually moving to the Salinas Valley and broadening beyond fruit. \nWhen Stone retired in 1979\, he sold the business to the Crandall family\, who continue with the same dedication to organic gardening and farming. The business is now based in Suisun City\, less than an hour from Sacramento\, CA. \nGardening all starts with the soil; healthier soil means healthier plants. Ross Noonan will explain and show how we can help nature work. He’ll offer rose-specific tips\, too. \n\nCR CREDIT APPROVED\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Gregg’s Take on Roses
DESCRIPTION:What roses will we see in our world 100 years from now? With climate change bringing drought and unpredictable weather patterns\, how can we help the most beautiful of roses to survive? Gregg Lowery has attempted to solve this problem with his research and preservation of rare and old garden roses from around the world. \nGregg Lowery\, with his partner\, Phillip Robinson\, started collecting old and rare roses in the early 1980’s with their nursery\, Vintage Gardens\, which has evolved into The Friends of Vintage Roses\, a non-profit dedicated to preserving these special roses – most of which are not available commercially. He will speak to us about his current ideas and solutions to saving roses for humanity of the future. \nGregg Lowery – The Friends of Vintage Roses – “In my perspective\, all roses are historical. Time goes on.” \nA RAFFLE of roses and other items and the MONTHLY ROSE SHOW will be held after the presentation!

SUMMARY:Honoring the Rose
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Ruth Tiffany present a program that honor the rose\, our national flower. \nRuth does\, in fact\, grow more than 800 roses on a small corner lot in east San Diego. She says: “Growing roses in three different gardens over nearly 30 years has taught me\, and continues to teach me\, of the amazing physical and mental health benefits of this life-sustaining hobby. I want to teach and show people that the beauty\, joy\, and healing power of roses can be stronger than the pain\, anger\, and division that exist so fully in our world today.” Details on the garden and her odyssey with roses are set forth in her article in the American Rose Annual 2019.\nRuth has written numerous articles on growing roses for the San Diego Rose Society newsletter. She speaks regularly to the San Diego Rose Society and other societies in the Pacific Southwest District. She was a judge for the annual Rose Trials at the Rose Hills Test Garden in Whittier California for several years. In 2019\, former President of the American Rose Society and hybridizer\, Robert Martin\, named and registered a shrub rose “Ruth Tiffany” from his many crosses of Julia Child/Ann Morrow Lindberg.\n\nCR CREDIT APPROVED\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:My 60 years in Roses and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Tom Carruth tells us about his time in the world of roses. \nTom Carruth is one of the greats of modern rose breeding – the winner of 11 All-America Rose Selections (AARS) and creator of more than 150 cultivars.  When he finished up his graduate work in plant breeding\, he was just in the right spot at the right time. Tom started working with Jackson and Perkins\, which is a huge name in the US\, and which was at its full monster size at that point\, too.” \nAfter about three and a half years his breakthrough into breeding came with a job as a rose breeder at Armstrong Nurseries. That was in 1979. He was to breed roses for another 33 years – first at Armstrong and then for 25 years at another famous home\, Weeks Roses.  Carruth left Weeks in 2012 to curate the Rose Collection at the Huntington Library\, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens in San Marino\, California. But his roses have continued to be released. \nDoes he miss the breeding? He says: “I miss seeing the babies\, because that was always an exciting time – when they were starting to open and you never knew what they were going to be. Do I miss the corporate stuff? No. At the Huntington I’m out with plants every day in a garden setting. I’m learning new things from a horticultural point of view\, and that’s always exciting.” \n\n\nCR CREDIT APPROVED \n\n\nRegister Here
