SUMMARY:E.B. Stone Soil Health & Fertilization; Gardening Relieves Stress
DESCRIPTION:Located in Solano County\, E.B. Stone is one of the nation’s oldest organic fertilizer producers. Founded in 1916 in San Jose\, E.B. Stone the company was named for a local farmer\, E.B. Stone. He created a fertilizer for his fruit trees that produced bigger and better crops. His fertilizers and amendments became so popular\, he turned his attention to his self-named company full time\, eventually moving to the Salinas Valley and broadening beyond fruit. \nWhen Stone retired in 1979\, he sold the business to the Crandall family\, who continue with the same dedication to organic gardening and farming. The business is now based in Suisun City\, less than an hour from Sacramento\, CA. \nGardening all starts with the soil; healthier soil means healthier plants. Ross Noonan will explain and show how we can help nature work. He’ll offer rose-specific tips\, too. \n\nCR CREDIT APPROVED\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Gregg’s Take on Roses
DESCRIPTION:What roses will we see in our world 100 years from now? With climate change bringing drought and unpredictable weather patterns\, how can we help the most beautiful of roses to survive? Gregg Lowery has attempted to solve this problem with his research and preservation of rare and old garden roses from around the world. \nGregg Lowery\, with his partner\, Phillip Robinson\, started collecting old and rare roses in the early 1980’s with their nursery\, Vintage Gardens\, which has evolved into The Friends of Vintage Roses\, a non-profit dedicated to preserving these special roses – most of which are not available commercially. He will speak to us about his current ideas and solutions to saving roses for humanity of the future. \nGregg Lowery – The Friends of Vintage Roses – “In my perspective\, all roses are historical. Time goes on.” \nA RAFFLE of roses and other items and the MONTHLY ROSE SHOW will be held after the presentation!

SUMMARY:Honoring the Rose
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Ruth Tiffany present a program that honor the rose\, our national flower. \nRuth does\, in fact\, grow more than 800 roses on a small corner lot in east San Diego. She says: “Growing roses in three different gardens over nearly 30 years has taught me\, and continues to teach me\, of the amazing physical and mental health benefits of this life-sustaining hobby. I want to teach and show people that the beauty\, joy\, and healing power of roses can be stronger than the pain\, anger\, and division that exist so fully in our world today.” Details on the garden and her odyssey with roses are set forth in her article in the American Rose Annual 2019.\nRuth has written numerous articles on growing roses for the San Diego Rose Society newsletter. She speaks regularly to the San Diego Rose Society and other societies in the Pacific Southwest District. She was a judge for the annual Rose Trials at the Rose Hills Test Garden in Whittier California for several years. In 2019\, former President of the American Rose Society and hybridizer\, Robert Martin\, named and registered a shrub rose “Ruth Tiffany” from his many crosses of Julia Child/Ann Morrow Lindberg.\n\nCR CREDIT APPROVED\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:My 60 years in Roses and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Tom Carruth tells us about his time in the world of roses. \nTom Carruth is one of the greats of modern rose breeding – the winner of 11 All-America Rose Selections (AARS) and creator of more than 150 cultivars.  When he finished up his graduate work in plant breeding\, he was just in the right spot at the right time. Tom started working with Jackson and Perkins\, which is a huge name in the US\, and which was at its full monster size at that point\, too.” \nAfter about three and a half years his breakthrough into breeding came with a job as a rose breeder at Armstrong Nurseries. That was in 1979. He was to breed roses for another 33 years – first at Armstrong and then for 25 years at another famous home\, Weeks Roses.  Carruth left Weeks in 2012 to curate the Rose Collection at the Huntington Library\, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens in San Marino\, California. But his roses have continued to be released. \nDoes he miss the breeding? He says: “I miss seeing the babies\, because that was always an exciting time – when they were starting to open and you never knew what they were going to be. Do I miss the corporate stuff? No. At the Huntington I’m out with plants every day in a garden setting. I’m learning new things from a horticultural point of view\, and that’s always exciting.” \n\n\nCR CREDIT APPROVED \n\n\nRegister Here
