Rose of the Month For January, 2008 by Barbara Picarelli
Here we are in a new year, and with lots ahead of us to keep us busy in our gardens. Perhaps you are planning to put in some new roses. Well here is the last of the ones I photographed in our MAGC garden last year. ‘Lady Elsie May’ is a fairly new release in 2005 from Angelica Nurseries and hybridized by Reinhard Noack. It is a pink blend (mostly coral) with a semi-double petal count of 8-14, and very slight fragrance. Listed as a shrub rose, it grows between 3-4 ft tall, and equally wide. Foliage is waxy green, with excellent disease resistance, and flowers that grow in clusters on nice strong cutting stems, and repeats well. An AARS winner in 2005, it has parentage of ‘Repandia’ (unpatented) and ‘Gruss an Angeln’ (unpatented). It can be used as a border plant, and is easily available at most garden centers.
