FAST FACTS - PHYLLODY

SIGNS
None
SYMPTOMS
Abnormal flower form
Blossoms have leaf-like structures rather than flower organs
New flowers growing out of the reproductive portion of the rose
Normal and abnormal flowers simultaneously on the plant; overall plant healthy
CAUSE
Rose phyllody (pronounced fil-o-dee) as a result of changes in plant hormone balance or living infectious agents (not yet confirmed in roses)
OPTIMAL CONDITIONS / HABITAT
More often seen in floribundas
Environmental stress - hot weather when flower buds are forming or water stress
If caused by environmental stress, symptoms disappear when stress is eliminated
TREATMENT
Prevention:
Prevent environmental stress; keep plants vigorous with proper care and irrigation
GOOD GUY / BAD GUY?
This garden malady is just a nuisance and usually disappears on its own
