Phyllody

FAST FACTS - PHYLLODY
by Nanette Londeree, Master Rosarian

SIGNS

  • None

    SYMPTOMS

  • Abnormal flower form
  • Blossoms have leaf-like structures rather than flower organs
  • New flowers growing out of the reproductive portion of the rose
  • Normal and abnormal flowers simultaneously on the plant; overall plant healthy

    CAUSE

  • Rose phyllody (pronounced fil-o-dee) as a result of changes in plant hormone balance or living infectious agents (not yet confirmed in roses)

    OPTIMAL CONDITIONS / HABITAT

  • More often seen in floribundas
  • Environmental stress - hot weather when flower buds are forming or water stress
  • If caused by environmental stress, symptoms disappear when stress is eliminated

    TREATMENT

    Prevention:

  • Prevent environmental stress; keep plants vigorous with proper care and irrigation

    GOOD GUY / BAD GUY?

  • This garden malady is just a nuisance and usually disappears on its own
