ROSE CARE FOR MARCH
by Florence Taylor, Consulting Rosarian
Now that we are hopefully through with pruning and happily watching the rain come down, it’s a good time to spread alfalfa and Epsom salts around your roses. Alfalfa adds nitrogen to the soil and stimulates new growth and healthy leaves. The magnesium in the Epsom salts helps with basal breaks. Spread about 2 cups of the alfalfa and 2 tablespoons of the Epsom salts around each bush and let the rain help water it in. Use less in container plants and hold off on other fertilizers until after the first flush of bloom this spring.
This is also a good time to really take a good look at the pruning job that you have done. I know that after pruning many plants, I might get a bit sloppy by the end of the day. Now is the time to go back and fine tune your job. So much easier now than when the plant is loaded with foliage. Also, any bud eyes that are growing into the center of the plant can now be easily removed.
TIP FOR THE ORGANIC GARDENER:
Weeds that are growing in cracks on the sidewalk, patio and in rocks and are difficult to pull out will die if you pour white vinegar on them. Much nicer than toxic spray.
