ROSE CARE FOR JUNE
by Florence Taylor, Consulting Rosarian

I hope that you were able to attend this years Rose Show at the Northgate Mall on May 12th. It was my 10th show and every year they get bigger and better. I don’t know how our members manage to do it as each year brings its challenges, whether it be rain, wind or heat. This year we had a short heat spell before the show that spoiled some of our blooms but you would never know it when you saw what was on the show table.

The strong winds that we had in the middle of May, ripped many of the rose blooms apart. The good news is that makes deadheading at this time easier. Keeping in mind that this is the way to prolong the blooming cycle. So sharpen those clippers. It is also recommended to fertilize with a balanced fertilizer at this time.

You could be seeing signs of some blackspot or rust. When the weather is warm along with rain or fog the disease flourishes in high humidity. Don’t despair …. usually it will all but disappear on its own as the weather dries. Removing infected leaves from the bush will help stop the spread.

If you have old garden roses that have finished their bloom, now is the time to prune, remove dead wood and thin if necessary.

THERE’S ONE SURE THING THAT A BOUQUET OF ROSES MAKES YOU WANT: MORE ROSES!
