ROSE CARE FOR AUGUST
by Lenore Ruckman, Consulting Rosarian
This month we will have our dog days of summer, warm days with cool nights and the summer pattern of fog in the late evening and early morning depending on where you live in Marin. Our temperatures can vary from the high 60's to 70's in southern Marin to the 80's and 90's in San Rafael and Novato. Get to know how our variable weather treats your roses. First priority is to water, water, water. Second, deadhead all spent blooms to encourage the fall bloom cycle. Roses love a good bath on the leaves in the early morning to prevent spider mites and clean the leaves.
Feed a good balanced fertilizer to keep nice blooms coming into the fall. If you plan to exhibit at our NCNH conference in October that we are hosting, cut back to 2 to 3 five leaflets to time for a good bloom the first week of October. Do this the first and second week of August.
My garden is just now recovering from the damage of leaf drop caused by the late rains in June. Be patient and cut back if necessary to promote new growth and your garden will be lovely in late August and into the fall. Remove the leaves and blossoms that have fallen and re-mulch if necessary to conserve water and keep down the weeds.
Enjoy your garden and share your roses!
